Time: ~3 hours
This is another request from an artist on DeviantArt. I drew his/her original character Kallen. I used a couple of references for the scarf and pose. I also tried to add my own take on his character and make him look a bit older.
I had a pretty hard time with this piece, mostly because I haven't drawn boys in such a long time! I warmed up with some practice sketches of Dylan O'Brien and Levi Ackerman to get a mix of realism and anime-style (this mix is what I believe my style represents).
If I am not using references, I find it harder to draw boys than girls. Why? As I've said before, I have a tendency to prettify my drawings.
When drawing boys, I have to actively think about drawing smaller, less curved eyes; sharper cheekbones; smaller lips; broader, well-defined shoulders; etc.
By the way, those are mountains in the background, not pyramids OTL. I drew the frame mostly thinking about design and pattern making -- it doesn't hold any meaning in regards to the character.
Things I need to practice drawing:
- backgrounds
- clothes
- anatomy (especially hand-to-face proportion)
